My roommate and I are going to host a 4th of July BBQ on the rooftop deck. It was a fairly last minute decision despite all the invites we've received for other parties around town. What makes our party different? We will be able to watch the fireworks shows in San Francisco followed by the ones in Oakland and Berkeley, if the weather permits. Three BBQ grills will be running simultaneously, and we shall eat meat. Lots of it. Perhaps we shall partake in some cider as well.

The new cell phone is giving me grief. Why so many functions?

6.28.2003

I'm working in the ER today. It has been a quiet day so far, but that could change at any moment... You never know what to expect on any given day, and that's what I like about the working here. Plus I get to (hopefully) fix some child's problem and then send them out the door. Satisfied patients and families come and go...

I'm hanging out with Jesse tonight.

And Gherkin, too...

Amendment: The 3rd day of sunburn hurts the most. That's when the skin actually does melt off... Save meeee!

6.26.2003

The 2nd day of sunburn hurts the most. I feel like I was in the middle of a nuclear blast, and now my skin is about to melt off. Not a pretty picture. Just don't touch me I say. Ouch!

I have yet another new toy... a new Samsung a500 flip phone. Very sleek and dinky indeed. Now people can't laugh at my old huge brick-like cell phone anymore. Hey now. There was a time when my old cell phone was cool... And I know most of you don't remember when cell phones were the size of old-fashioned walkie-talkies...

Happy Birthday Tiff!

Plan for today: crepes, bubble tea, wander campus, shopping, dinner.

Real bubble tea! Chillin' on campus.

With Kari and Yu-Ting. Harmony reflecting.

6.24.2003

Harmony is finally here. After picking her up, we went to Chinatown and found this place where we could sit on a balcony to eat dim sum. Good food. Excellent company. Great ambience underneath a glowing neon sign "Chinatown Restaurant."

Yesterday was so much fun! We walked around the Boardwalk, tried lots of 60 cent roller coaster rides, ate 60 cent hot dogs, and pretty much acted like the high school students we look like. Later that evening, the girls all did some karaoking, and they were completely awesome! I can't express in words how much I love hanging out with them! They're all so cute and fun!

This morning, Myra and I were the first to wake up, and so we took a little tour of the area before meeting up with the rest of the girls for breakfast. Then we spent most of the afternoon chillin' on the beach. Let's just say, I should have used some suntan lotion. Itch + red = sunburn = Ouch!

Morning walk to the Santa Cruz lighthouse.

At your own risk...

Myra enjoys the view from the beachside condos.

Reflections.

Cherie, Myra, Diana, and a flower.

The new senior residents. Before the sunburns.

6.23.2003

I am a senior resident as of now. Time to celebrate in Santa Cruz! Woo hoo!

Fun rides. Fun times.

The karaoke bar next door.

"Girls just wanna have fun!"

Hot Sexy Dogs! 60 cents each.

Tomorrow, after I get out of the hospital, I have two days off before I start back on as a senior. Our class is so awesome. We actually planned a mini intern retreat part II down in Santa Cruz, and we'll be staying at some beach-front condos during that time. That should be fun, and I'm excited to actually see Santa Cruz because I understand it's a very nice get-away resort area. I'll only be staying one night, though, since Harmony is coming into town to chill with me before she starts her summer program at Stanford. But if it all works out, I'm thinking she and I can find Anna before she heads back to Cincinnati. I love these little TAF reunions. And I especially love calling all my ex-campers my "friends" now.

Today is my last day of call as an intern. Having call every 4th night for an entire year completely drains you of motivation and energy. I don't know how the heck I made it this far...

6.21.2003

I love the summer solstice. The day couldn't be any longer and more beautiful! I wish every day was like this.

I'm headed out to Mike and Tiffany's place for a dumpling party! Yummy!

Farewell Diep. We love you.

6.20.2003

I was kindly covered by my fellow interns this afternoon, so Anna and I left early and got some bubble tea before doing a mini photography tour at my favorite locations. Anna took lots of pictures of the scenery. She, however, was the subject of my photos today.

Later that evening, I went to hang out at the big sib / little sib party at Laura's. It's very exciting to see new interns ready to take over in a few days. I particularly liked these photos of my fellow interns:

Anna is shadowing me at work today! I plan to act more doctorly than usual... and pretend that I know something of substance.

6.19.2003

Mocha and Capuccino with Anna.

I'm going to the yearly Residents' BBQ tonight. I'm all about the food... and of course, the great people I work with too...

Some of the residents at Ted's BBQ!

My "sib" Thomas and me. Soon-to-be "2nd years"

I am still awake. It's like I have insomnia. But really, I don't. I want to sleep, but I'm cursed with carrying the on-call phone and my pager.

Well, at least the new interns are in town. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

6.17.2003

Yay! Anna is in town!

Bubble Tea at Cafe Tapioca in Dublin!

6.16.2003

Will these goats ever stop baaaaa-ing? And since when did goats go baaaa? Well, I'm extremely tired now. I've had only 6 hours of sleep since Friday. Time to go to bed and count goats.

There are an awful lot of goats in my backyard at this moment... It's making me hungry. Anyways, I'm headed out to dinner with my "sibs" at a restaurant called Burma Super Star. What a cool-sounding name for a restaurant. The name alone is making me want to get up and dance... "That is what you are... Burma Super Star..."

I made the most of my post-call day off and spent it with my lovely fellow TAYL peeps. I had an exhausting, but really cool day. I'll let the pics speak for themselves.

I typically don't write much about work, except to complain or to share about some interesting social event. Patient related issues should remain private, and this blogger business certainly is nowhere near confidential. So, I never share any substantial details about my hospital life. But tonight I shall say a few things: I have been touched by the patients and parents I have been taking care of today. Listening to the mother of the diabetic child, I can hear the quiver in her voice really wanting to know if her child will live a normal and full life. Speaking to the father of the child who has a skull fracture after falling off a skateboard without a helmet, I can sense the regrets and the "what ifs" that are running through his head. I feel the pain of the family in the room next door who don't know if their son will ever "wake up" and be the normal teenager he was just months ago or if they (and us) will ultimately know the reason for all his medical problems. And then there's the young woman who requires so much medical and ventilatory support after an emergency head surgery that you can't help feeling a little bit sad. But it's this same person who, after a few minutes of struggled conversation through her tracheostomy, reminds you that life is worth living and that suffering will pass... I know, because I can see it in her eyes and how she reaches out to touch my hand. I barely know this young lady, but tonight, she's my hero. I'm happy to be her doctor right now.

TAYL camp started yesterday, and I miss being with my West Coast Taiwanese American peeps since I have to be on call today. But, I'm hoping everything goes smoothly today and tomorrow, so I can join them for most of tomorrow. I'm getting more excited by the minute!

I had an awesome evening. Many of us met up at Reena's in honor of Diep, who will be leaving us soon. We also had a nice visit from the new parents, Justin and Heather. Afterwards, several of us went to a club downtown to chill for a bit. I am exhausted, but content. Now, if only I could stay this psyched for my call tomorrow.

HoCh and Cindy. Diep, Cherie, and little Noah.
